DD-WRT: Installing Optware

Post by Jarod » Sat Sep 21, 2013 4:41 pm

Router used in this video: http://astore.amazon.com/trythisathome- ... B004B1Z6EE

Kong DDWRT Builds: http://www.desipro.de/ddwrt/

Turn on secure shell (SSH) on your router.

Run cfdisk /dev/sdX (Where X is the letter of your thumbdrive. be careful, you can erase stuff with this)

erase the existing partitions. make new ones to your liking, swap and whatever you want.
create the filesystems on the partitions you just made using mke2fs -m 1 -L Optware /dev/sdX1 or mkswap /dev/sdX2

plug the device into the router.

ssh in via ssh root@192.168.1.1, enter your admin password.

then run wget -O /tmp/prep_optware http://ddwrt.basmaf.com/prep_optware
then sh /tmp/prep_optware

then grab some lunch. or bacon... go for bacon.

come back, wait at least one minute after the script has finished, then run reboot in the ssh terminal.
wait another minute, then try your ssh again, you should be greeted with the login screen as usual except there should be a small line that says "Enhanced with OTRW2"

You win. from here you can set up services with service, install packages with ipkg, and loads of other stuff. we'll go over more of that in later videos.

Hi. Question. Noticed you have the Kong Build. Was wondering, are there special steps in installing the Kong 2.6K build onto your router for the first time? I currently have an Asus RT-N16 with DD-WRT BrainSlayer (r19519), but was looking to install Kong. Is it the same as installing any other BS build? I know with the 3.x Kernel Builds, the Asus requires steps, but I can't find any other information on the 2.6, which I would be trying to install. As far as I can tell, I can just upgrade to Kong like I normally would any other build, but can't seem to get any verification.

I know with all the routers I have (Broadcom chips) its exactly the same as installing a brainslayer build. you can even swap back and forth if you wish to.

Kernel 3.0 I have not done anything with yet, so i don't know. i know they dont have everything functional quite yet, so im hesitant to put it on my router as I don't have a backup router anymore lol

Yeah, I was able to get kong on it no problem.

Also, if you do decide with 3.0, here are the steps I was referring to:
